Meet Mia and Angel

Originally, we had planned on spending our last day in Bali visiting the elephant sanctuary nearby.  However, after researching the “sanctuary” and the treatment of its inhabitants we were saddened at what we discovered and decided that we would not support such a place by visiting or spending our money there.  I, being a bit fanatical about the treatment of animals, sat in our room extremely upset while V, awesome husband that he is, searched for, and found, an amazing animal welfare center called BAWA!

A quick search on tirpadvisor lists BAWA as the #3 attraction in Ubud and its easy to see why. BAWA is an amazing non-profit organization located in the center of Ubud.  Their mission is to not only help stray animals of all kinds, but to increase the health and safety of animals and humans through medical care, sterilization, and education.  Operating on donations and volunteers, it’s an amazing place to spend some time.

On the day we visited BAWA headquarters in Ubud, Mia and Angel were the resident dogs on site.

Mia, blind from birth is a little skittish around loud noises but such a love!

Angel, a rambunctious little pup (at the time) that just loves to play.

While we were there, a kitten (only a few days old) was brought in by a tourist who had found it alone and crying. The representative at BAWA warned that it probably would not survive, being so young.  A few months later, the kitten was featured on their Facebook page alive and healthy.

BAWA is an amazing organization that I just can not say enough good things about!  If you are ever in the area take some time and stop by to donate, volunteer your time, or just to play with the animals and help socialize them.  It’s one experience you won’t forget and it might just leave you feeling a little better about the world.
